We couldn't let another year go by . . .

It's been another crazy year, and there's a lot to discuss -- and also celebrate! -- at StrictlyVC's only in-person event of 2021.  Join us for evening of drinks, hors d'oeuvres, networking and programming at the rustic, magical Stable Cafe in San Francisco's Mission District, which features indoor space and a much larger, tree-studded outdoor garden with heat lamps and sparkling lights to get you in the holiday spirit a little early. We'll laugh, we'll cry, you'll want to bring a jacket (is our guess) and a vaccination card, which must be shown at the door per the city of San Francisco and the owners of Stable Cafe.

We'll have take-home fleece blankets to keep you cozy and, courtesy of our partner in the evening, Eclipse Ventures, Lucira tests, just in time for your travels.:)

You must be registered to attend this event.

Tickets are available at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/strictlyvc-insider-series-tickets-165999325451

Speakers

Jack Abraham

CEO, Atomic

Abraham is a serial entrepreneur and investor who today runs Atomic, a Miami- and San Francisco-based startup studio that has spun out Hims & Hers, among many other venture-backed startups. Abraham sold his first company, Milo, to eBay when he was 24.

Kathryn Haun

General Partner, a16z

Haun is a venture capitalist who sits on the boards of Coinbase, among other companies. Previously, she was a federal prosecutor focusing on fraud, cyber, and corporate crime alongside agencies including the SEC, FBI, and Treasury. She created the government’s first cryptocurrency task force and led investigations into the Mt. Gox hack.

Parker Conrad

CEO, Rippling

Conrad is the founder of Rippling, an employee management platform currently valued at $6.5 billion by investors. Conrad previously cofounded Zenefits, the human resources platform and, before that, cofounded two other companies, an online financial advisor called SigFig and a stock research wiki called WikiInvest.

Nader Al-Naji

Creator of DeSo, BitClout, Basis

Al-Naji aims to decentralize social media via DeSo, a blockchain off which a small but growing number of apps has been built, including BitClout, a platform where each user is tied to their own “creator coin" that other users can buy and sell. Al-Naji previously founded a crypto startup called Basis and earlier worked as an engineer at both Google and the D.E. Shaw Group.

Mateo Jaramillo

Cofounder and CEO, Form Energy

Jaramillo cofounded Form Energy, an ambitious startup that's working to develop a long-duration battery that uses iron and aims to provide energy storage for multiple days. He previously was VP of Products and Programs for Tesla's stationary energy storage program, an effort that he started. Before Tesla, Jaramillo was COO of Gaia Power Technologies, an early distributed energy storage firm.

Lora Kolodny

Journalist, CNBC

Kolodny covers Tesla, new vehicle tech, and climate tech for CNBC in San Francisco. Previously she was an editor at TechCrunch, covering breakthrough technologies. She has also worked as a reporter at The Wall Street Journal and as a contributor to The New York Times.

Erin Griffith

Journalist, New York Times

Griffith is a New York Times journalist based in the San Francisco bureau, where she reports on technology startups and venture capital.

Before joining The Times she worked as a senior writer at Wired and Fortune, reporting on topics ranging from self-driving cars and social media to SoftBank and startup unicorns.

Sarah McBride

Journalist, Bloomberg

McBride is a reporter with Bloomberg in San Francisco, covering venture capital and technology. She joined Bloomberg in 2016 after spending more than five years with Reuters, where she also covered VC as well as election issues. She began her career with the Wall Street Journal, working in its L.A. and Hong Kong bureaus.

Lior Susan

Founder, Eclipse Ventures

Before launching Eclipse in 2015 -- a firm focused on the industrial revolution and whose bets include Bright Machines and Lucira Health --  Susan was the founder and general partner at LabIX, the hardware investment platform of Flextronics (now Flex). Before moving to Silicon Valley, he was a serial entrepreneur in Tel Aviv, where he helped build Intucell, which was sold to Cisco in 2012

Connie Loizos

Founder, StrictlyVC

Loizos is the founder of StrictlyVC, the news organization, event series and, more newly, podcast. She got her start in Silicon Valley at the original Red Herring magazine in the late '90s and later worked for Time Inc., Dow Jones, Crain Communications, the San Jose Mercury News, and Reuters.

She is also the Silicon Valley Editor of TechCrunch, which she joined in 2015.

Schedule

5:00 – 5:45 AM

Check-In/Networking/Drinks/Hors d'ouevres

Catering by Jessica Lasky & Co.

5:45 – 6:00 PM

Opening remarks with Connie Loizos and the night's co-host, Lior Susan of Eclipse Ventures

A quick look at how startups can best address (and even capitalize on) the current supply chain crisis

6:00 – 6:20 PM

All things crypto with General Partner Katie Haun of a16z

Katie Haun created the government's first cryptocurrency task force; now she's among the highest-profile investors in digital assets despite a murky regulatory landscape. We'll talk risks, rewards, and what's next.

6:25 – 6:45 PM

Talking novel battery tech, with Form Energy's Mateo Jaramillo

Form Energy says that a product it's developing using iron-air technology could store electricity for 100 hours -- and at costs competitive with legacy power plants. Can it fulfill its vision, and what might the impact be if so?

6:50 – 7:10 PM

A conversation about decentralized social media with founder Nader Al-Naji

BitClout emerged on the scene to a very uneven reception earlier this year. Can the blockchain behind it, DeSo, take off?

7:15 – 7:35 PM

The business of making startups, with Jack Abraham

Atomic Labs has already launched 16 companies, with nearly one new outfit announcing outside funding each month this year. How does it work, and what's the end game?

7:40 – 8:00 PM

The story of Rippling, with Parker Conrad

Rippling, whose software manages every aspect of employee life, has quickly ballooned; we'll look at how it's evolving based on lessons learned by its serial entrepreneur founder.

8:05 – 9:15 PM

More drinking/More networking/More food!

Sweets, cocktails, and goodbye until next time . . .

The StrictlyVC Insider series is taking place at the Stable Cafe in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood. The cafe was originally built in the 1800's as Mayor James Phelan's carriage house; we'll be mostly occupying its tree-studded garden area for safety's sake as we say goodbye (fingers crossed!) to this pandemic.
